Behind the scenes at the museum - an update
Alongside the building work on the Museum, we are working hard to get the collection ready for display with a range of professional conservators supporting work on key artefacts from the Bryher Sword and Mirror and the Nornour brooches to the terrestrial and celestial globes used for teaching navigation.
Expert conservator, Alison Smith, visited St Mary’s for a day to review the paintings in the Museum’s collection and stabilise the painting of Augustus Smith (who served as Lord Proprietor in the mid 19th century). It can now be transported to her studio for further restoration, that will give the painting a new lease of life and protect it for the future.
The museum have also been continuing with conservation days , along with weekly conservation afternoons held by the Curator with staff and volunteers. Our volunteers are vital to the success of the new museum so we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who is giving up their time to help.
